Residential Foundation Repair in North Texas - Help Me Understand What I Am Missing

Speaker Bio:
Will Herbert is the President at HnH Engineering, Inc., a Fort Worth structural engineering firm established in 2011. Will graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering and was licensed as a professional engineer in 2003. He has 27 years of experience designing structures and foundations in North Texas.
Presentation Description:
With the expansive soil in North Texas, residential foundation repair is a big business and is steadily growing. Our office has had the unique experience of observing under houses after foundation work has been completed. What we have observed has been surprising and quite concerning from a structural perspective.
The presentation will discuss the basics of residential foundation design, current accepted practices of evaluating foundation performance, and the typical repair measures that are used to address foundation movement. We will express our concerns with the logic behind some of the common repair measures being taken and will provide photos of the underside of several different foundations after the work has been completed.
The goal of the presentation is to shed light to fellow structural engineers of the concerns we have with the foundation repair industry and have a discussion of steps that can be taken to help protect the public from work that in many cases is compromising foundations in lieu of repairing or stabilizing.
