Topic: Post Oak Blvd BRT: Bus Platform Design Saves Time and Money while Reducing Traffic Impacts (1.0 PDH)
Presenters: Ashish Patel of LAN and Michael Hasen of HVJ
Abstract: Uptown Houston is rebuilding Post Oak Boulevard into an exquisitely designed grand boulevard while preserving existing automobile access, substantially improving transit service and creating a beautifully landscaped pedestrian environment. Initial design of bus platforms proposed slab on grade supported by drilled piers as large as 48” diameter with piers running into traffic lanes due to bridge beams needed to avoid conflicts with U/G utilities. Extended lane closures would have seriously increased congestion in the corridor during platform construction. The owner asked HVJ & LAN to brainstorm solutions. A platform foundation system more similar to the planned pavement construction would allow the platform and pavement to move together and eliminate the requirement for deep foundations. LAN & HVJ worked on fast track to issue revised construction documents. As of now, the bus platform and dedicated bus lane construction is approaching completion with substantial cost and time savings.
