Topic: Post Oak Blvd BRT: Bus Platform Design Saves Time and Money while Reducing Traffic Impacts (1.0 PDH)
Presenters: Ashish Patel of LAN and Michael Hasen of HVJ
Abstract: Uptown Houston is rebuilding Post Oak Boulevard into an exquisitely designed grand boulevard while preserving existing automobile access, substantially improving transit service and creating a beautifully landscaped pedestrian environment. Initial design of bus platforms proposed slab on grade supported by drilled piers as large as 48” diameter with piers running into traffic lanes due to bridge beams needed to avoid conflicts with U/G utilities. Extended lane closures would have seriously increased congestion in the corridor during platform construction. The owner asked HVJ & LAN to brainstorm solutions. A platform foundation system more similar to the planned pavement construction would allow the platform and pavement to move together and eliminate the requirement for deep foundations. LAN & HVJ worked on fast track to issue revised construction documents. As of now, the bus platform and dedicated bus lane construction is approaching completion with substantial cost and time savings.
Ashish Patel, PE
As a professional engineer with 17 years of experience and a subject matter expert at LAN, Mr. Patel leads the analysis and design of complex projects that involve unique challenges associated with environmental and dynamic loading including hurricane force winds, flooding and seismic events. Ashish has provided structural engineering services for several Ports and Terminal projects, numerous Vertical Work projects, several Water & Wastewater projects, several Highway and Rail Road Bridges and a few Transit System projects. Ashish has provided his expertise in condition assessment, non-destructive testing, forensic analysis, repair and retrofit solutions for several building structures, several bridge structures as well as several water and wastewater structures. Having witnessed flood hazard firsthand in Houston, Ashish is passionate about ensuring that structures in coastal environments are designed, detailed and constructed with safeguard and resilience against potential flood hazard. Ashish’s in-depth knowledge of both structural and geotechnical engineering facilitates his analysis and design of structural systems that involve soil-structure interaction.
