Dear Members:
The next meeting of the SEAoT San Antonio Chapter will be held on September 15th, 2020. Due to the current Public Health Emergency we are hosting our chapter meeting via GotoMeeting. A meeting invite will be sent to registered participants prior to the meeting date.
Topic: Structural Commissioning: Dynamic Performance Measurement and Assessment
Presenter: Alan Jeary and Dr. Tom Winant - STRAAM Group
Summary:
Building Commissioning and inspection processes have traditionally been focused on validating the performance of mechanical and electrical systems in buildings, with little attention paid to the performance of the actual structure compared to the design intent. This is generally due to the costs associated with in depth non-destructive testing and how the industry developed. Although the government inspectors and other authorities inspect components of a structure, rarely have measurements been taken to validate performance. But now, the codes have evolved to include many aspects of performance, and taking the measurements is not difficult. Advancements in technology now allow for a measure of a structure’s performance through capturing its dynamic response. The process is quick, simple and provides invaluable information. The processed data provides the building’s Dynamic Signature which represents the ‘as is’ condition of the building. Analysis of the Dynamic Signature provides detailed information regarding the behavior of the entire structure or specific areas. In concept, it’s similar to an ‘EKG’ for a structure in that one can compare it with normal behavior, identify unusual performance and memorialize a datum for future degradation.
