Topic:
Practical Considerations for Serviceability Design of Marine Infrastructure
Presenter:
Carlos Ospina, PhD, PE, FACI, Principal and Vice President with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger
Abstract:
Spanning from berth quays, docks, piers and bulkheads to container yards, cargo areas and buildings, awareness among terminal operators on the need to construct new or repair/upgrade existing structures to comply with the stringent serviceability requirements associated with marine facilities is paramount to ensure adequate operations and proper functioning of terminal equipment while preserving or even extending the expected design life of these structures. Based on personal observation of damage/deterioration in port facilities as part of inspections as a consultant and pictorial evidence documented through the years, the presentation highlights common deficiencies observed in the design and construction of a wide variety of marine structures while presenting recent developments in serviceability design and practical considerations aimed at rendering an adequate response of port structures to service level loads.
