Topic:
Bypassing Expansive Soils with Hollow Core Planks Over a Crawlspace
Presenter:
Eric Homburg, PE, SE, Project Manager at DUDLEY
Abstract:
The Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center is a 2-story, 120,000 sq ft mass timber facility to begin construction in the next few months. Its foundation was originally suggested to be a stiffened slab on grade. During the course of design and coordination, it was determined that a suspended hollow core plank slab system supported by elevated concrete beams and belled piers would be more economic, save time during construction, while also yielding better lifetime performance for the structure. This presentation strives to explain the factors that led to this decision, design considerations, and how the system could be applied to other projects.
