PROGRAM:

A Path to Engineer Training via Professional Seismic Design with Basic Principles

Presented by:

Juan Antonio Balderrama, P.E., PhD.

Presentation Description:

This presentation discusses capacity based design approaches to guarantee code targeted yield mechanisms in Seismic Design. Targeted yield mechanisms develop plastic hinges at designated deformation controlled elements; the internal force demands on several elements within these configurations could be determined by hand calculations. Training of engineers in academia and professional practice can exploit these scenarios and encourage the use of a) hand calculations in yielded structural configurations and b) traditional analysis methods to foster attainment of higher level engineering judgement.

Bio:

Juan Antonio Balderrama, PE, is an Assistant Professor of Instruction at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. Antonio earned a BS degree in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame and Masters and PhD degrees in civil engineering from the University of Florida. Antonio is a Structural Engineer with nine years of consulting engineering experience. Throughout his career, Antonio has led the structural engineering (design or peer review) of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and confined masonry in every market sector. His design experience includes projects in the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, North Africa, the North Sea, Bahamas, Mexico, and Brazil. He has published research outcomes on mitigation of hurricane wind induced damage to coastal infrastructure as journal articles. His research interests are centered on the structural response against lateral loads (including wind and seismic) of buildings.
