Topic: Sustainable Design & Embodied Carbon: What Structural Engineers Need to Know (1.0 PDH)

Abstract:

Sustainable design is increasingly becoming an essential aspect of building design as we grapple with the fact that the building construction sector is responsible for about 40% of carbon emissions and drastically contributes to global warming. As clients and industry partners look for strategies in delivering projects with sustainability goals and mitigating carbon emissions, it is imperative for structural engineers to educate themselves on best practices, technologies, and policies to reduce embodied carbon in our designs. Currently, materials and construction are responsible for 11% of carbon emissions and as building operations become more efficient, experts predict that embodied carbon will contribute to almost half of total new construction carbon emissions. Collectively, structural engineers have the power to make deliberate changes by being selective of which materials and products we specify and use in our projects.

This presentation will give an overview about the Sustainable Design Committees (SDCs) within NCSEA and local MOs, basic terminology in sustainable design such as embodied carbon, and the SE 2050 Commitment Program and its goals. The presentation will also serve as an opportunity to get more structural engineers in the Houston area involved with NCSEA’s Structural Design Committee as well as a starting ground to establish a Sustainable Design Committee within SEAoT.

Bio:

Priscilla Nguyen is a Structural Engineer at Martinez Moore Engineers (MME) in the Houston office and has more than seven years of experience. She joined MME in February 2022 after working in California for the first 5.5 years of her career. She has design and analysis experience in various sectors including healthcare, higher education, and science & technology. Priscilla received her bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and master’s in Civil Engineering with a structural focus from Stanford University. Priscilla is a licensed professional and structural engineer in the states of California and Texas. She has an interest for the equitable and sustainable design of the built environment to provide safe spaces all communities can experience. She is a member of the Sustainable Design (SDC) and Structural Engineering, Engagement and Equity (SE3) committees of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) and served as Co-Chair of the SE3 Committee for the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) in 2022-23.
