Dear Members:

The next meeting of the SEAoT San Antonio Chapter will be held on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026.  We will be hosting our meeting at Old San Francisco Steak House.

Topic: Structural Engineering for CLT Buildings: From Design Responsibility to Delivery

Summary:

This presentation will cover the responsibilities of the Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR) for cross-laminated timber (CLT) projects—whether the SEOR is taking full responsibility for all structural design elements or working within a mixed approach that includes deferred-approval structural items. We will explore specifications, connection strategies, structural gravity and lateral systems, fire design, efficient CLT spans, successful structural plan preparation, and best practices for coordination with the manufacturer during the shop-drawing and detailing phase.

We will also discuss designing to ensure projects pencil with value in mind from the very beginning, highlighting how early structural decisions influence cost, speed, constructability, and long-term performance.

Additionally, this presentation will cover specifying domestic timber and the broader benefits of doing so—from strengthening rural economies to advancing sustainability goals related to embodied carbon, carbon sequestration, and responsible forestry.

Presenter: Mr. Marc Rivard, SE, PE - Sterling Structural

Marc Rivard is currently a licensed Structural and Professional Engineer in the State of California, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire and is currently a Mass Timber Specialist with Sterling Structural where he provides technical project support, technical sales, and design assistance for cross laminated timber projects. From 2014-2023 he was the Regional Director for WoodWorks where he provided project assistance for light framed wood and mass timber projects, and provided Continuing Educational seminars for Engineers and Architects on various wood design topics. From 2000-2014 Marc practiced as a Senior Structural Engineer in California with experience primarily involving seismic structural design and analysis of new and existing structures for numerous building types.
