Topic: Ground Improvement for Building Foundation Support (1.0 PDH)
Presenter: Kevin Scott, P.E.

Abstract:
This presentation introduces the fundamentals of ground improvement for building foundations, with a focus on techniques commonly used in Texas and the Gulf Coast region. Participants will gain an understanding of the geotechnical principles behind ground improvement, learn how various methods are selected based on site conditions and project requirements, and explore the role of ground improvement in enhancing foundation performance, constructability, and cost efficiency.
The session will provide an overview of several commonly used ground improvement techniques and discuss their applications across a variety of sectors, including energy, transportation, industrial, logistics, and multifamily residential developments. Representative case histories will be presented to demonstrate practical implementation, design considerations, and project outcomes.
Kevin Scott, P.E. is the Regional Manager for Menard USA’s Houston office, where he supports design-build ground improvement and geotechnical construction projects in the Gulf Coast and Southwest US
Bio:

Kevin Scott, P.E. is the Regional Manager for Menard USA’s Houston office, where he supports design-build ground improvement and geotechnical construction projects in the Gulf Coast and Southwest US.
In this role, Kevin is responsible for the design and estimation of ground improvement systems, working with project teams to develop practical and constructable solutions for challenging subsurface conditions. Covering a range of geologic conditions and construction sectors in the Gulf Coast and SW US, the ground improvement techniques include Rigid Inclusions, Aggregate Piers, Prefabricated Vertical Drains, and Dynamic Compaction.
Kevin is a licensed professional engineer in multiple states with experience in geotechnical engineering, ground improvement, and design-build project delivery. Prior to joining Menard, he worked as a geotechnical consultant for 17 years in Birmingham, Alabama, where his project experience included commercial, industrial, and transportation developments across Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Kevin received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University.
